In 2007, a longtime collaborator of mine, Mark Lerman, hired me to design and fabricate a mobile theater. He had been the Artistic Director of Perishable Theatre in Providence until his family relocated to Williamsburg, VA. He was wanting to start producing theater again, but needed a theater that was manageable for a sole proprietor.
I called it the Tiny Itinerant Theatre Project. The original concept sketch is at the right.
I delivered an 8'x8' trailer theater a year later, and turned to designing the scenery and puppetry for the first show. In 2008 we unveiled the first production in the newly named Virginia Theatre Machine. We have produced five shows since the launch. I think it's probably the coolest thing I've done. And with a 8'x5' stage, it's the best funded theatre I've designed, on a per-square-foot basis,.
